History

Aldes was formed at the 1991 Autumn Conference at Bournemouth. Since then we have organised fringe meetings at nearly all federal conferences; built up a list of around 40 booklets and briefing notes; and contributed to most party policy working groups. We have over 250 members including MPs, MEPs, members of the House of Lords, and professors. Around 20% of our membership hold doctorates or higher qualifications. Many are associated with learned societies or chartered institutions.

We have the status of a Specified Associated Organisation within the Liberal Democrat party which gives us certain rights, including the right to submit policy motions to the Federal Conference as an organisation.
