The Government’s energy review, the volatility of fuel prices, vulnerability of oil platforms and pipelines, shortage of refining capacity, and worries about the free flow of oil from the Middle East and gas from Russia, have all focussed attention on the UK’s dependence on imported gas and oil. In 2007 Government conceded that safety concerns were insufficient to preclude new nuclear stations, but thoughts are returning to ‘clean coal’ technologies – coal being abundant in the UK. Can coal be used without accelerating global warming?
